Day 113

Dear Cute Little Indian Girl (who is not reading this blog due to death, age, or lack of interest in a white guy drawing pictures of her culture),

Sorry I made you look like Chucky, or the Bride of Chucky. I'm practicing with the hopes of getting better...

Sincerely,
Blake

Day 112

The drawing of the day. Wow, I am really slacking! The move is finally complete, and my basement studio is in good working condition so I feel like my blog can get back on track.

Today's drawing is a Howard Terpning study. Anyone that has ever had a discussion with me about western art has heard me talk about this guy. He is as good as everyone says.

To do a study of his work is to try to remake a Beatles' song. It's just not going to come close to as good as the original. This drawing is no exception. Pretty much terrible in comparison...

Day 110

Well, I have delayed my drawings yet again! I have been moving from an apartment to a house, so we have been busy, and it looks like we will be busy for a few days, so I might be slacking on the blog again. So, my apologies to both of you that follow this blog!

So for today, a drawing of a native american guy who looks like Abe Lincoln...

Day 109

I like this one, actually. Pretty quick, easy, and fun to do...

Day 108

Drawing of the day... I've really been obsessing over James Reynolds' landscapes and just about anything from Howard Terpning. I'm really trying to understand how they do what they do.

Day 107

The Drawing of the day... This is an early self-portrait of Salvador Dali. It's called "Self-Portrait with the Neck of Raphael"

As someone who really is interested in understanding any type of cultural reference, I really tried to understand the "Neck of Raphael" reference... but I never could. I'm pretty familiar with with Raphael's work, and he's pretty anatomically correct. For years (in middle school in high school) before I new Raphael's work, I just assumed his style was thick, long necks... but no

In college I did a few self-portraits with necks of Raphael to be interesting, pretentious, and mysterious. But in the end, like usual, I had no idea what I was talking about.

This painting is not one of my favorites, but sticks in my head a lot. So, I decided to draw it today. It's not totally accurate, but I think it looks a little more like Salvador Dali than his own. It's not uncommon for artists to make themselves better looking in their paintings. And for a crazy looking guy in his arrogant, styleless youth, I don't blame him. He wanted to look serious and noble. Though in a few years he was all about looking crazy and not stoic, like this picture...
